The Great Basin is a very extensive area of desert covering most of the US state of Nevada, the SE part of Oregon, and parts of Utah, Idaho and NW California. Its unhospitable nature made it one of the last areas of the USA to be settled by Europeans, who came surprisingly mainly from California and Oregon rather than from the East. The subsequent Indian Wars were fought against the Paiute, Bannock, Klamath, Modoc, Pit River and Shoshone tribes, known collectively as the 'Snakes'.
